About Palnackie

Palnackie is a small village on the eastern shore of the River Urr estuary in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. Sitting roughly midway between Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie, the village has a population of a few hundred and a strong community spirit — with a community-owned shop, an award-winning cafe, a village pub, a village hall and an active community council all within its boundaries.

The village has a long history tied to the sea. For 700 years, Palnackie's port on the Urr Water was a working harbour — exporting wool, granite and agricultural goods, and importing timber, coal and rum from across the Solway and beyond. Today the port is quiet, but it remains a central part of the village's identity. A short walk from the village is Orchardton Tower, Scotland's only free-standing round tower house, dating from the mid-15th century.

Palnackie sits within the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, within easy reach of the Galloway Forest Park, the Solway coast, and the market towns of Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright. For visitors, the village offers a range of places to stay, from self-catering cottages on the banks of the Urr to glamping and a historic B&B a short drive away.
