Becoming a councillor
Community councils are run entirely by volunteers — local residents aged 16 and above who care about where they live. No experience, qualifications, or public speaking confidence is needed.
What the role actually involves
Most people assume it’s more demanding than it is.
Meetings happen roughly once a quarter, usually on a weekday evening in the village hall. Most run for 60–90 minutes.
Between meetings, you’ll spend around 20–30 minutes reading meeting papers sent a few days beforehand. Occasionally there are site visits or community events to attend.
Total time commitment: roughly 2–4 hours a month for an ordinary member. Some councillors take on specific responsibilities (treasurer, secretary, planning liaison) — but that’s optional and roles are shared.

- Legal, planning, or financial expertise
- Any particular qualifications

Why it matters
Decisions get made whether or not local people are at the table. The community council is where Palnackie residents can influence planning decisions, road and infrastructure issues, local services, and what gets funded. A healthy, well-represented council means the village has a stronger voice with Dumfries & Galloway Council and other bodies.
